How to Care for and Maintain Your Swimsuit

Everything you need to know about keeping your swimsuit looking it’s best and last summer after summer.

Caring for your swimsuits doesn’t take long, but doing so makes a major difference in how it looks, feels, and performs season after season. With a simple rinse, wash, and proper drying routine, your swimsuit can last you summer after summer.

Here’s what we do (and don’t) recommend:

1. Rinse Your Swimsuit After Every Wear

Saltwater from the ocean, chlorine from the pool, sunscreen and sweat all have the ability to break down the fabric of your swimsuit with continued use over time. Even if you can’t do a full wash yet, rinse your swimsuit in cool or cold water after you’re done wearing it to remove any chemicals, salt, or oil.

2. Handwash Your Swimsuit, only (trust us on this one!)

While machine washing seems convenient, hand washing your swimsuit helps to ensure that you aren’t excessively stretching or wearing out the fabric and fading the color of your garment which is what can happen when you machine wash.

To wash by hand:

  • Use cold water, only
  • Use a gentle soap or detergent
  • Lightly massage the fabric of your suit - avoid unnecessary scrubbing

This method keeps your swimsuit looking new, whether you’re swimming in chlorinated pools, coastal waters, or resort destinations.

3. Skip Wringing it Out!

Never twist or wring out your swimsuit - this can put strain on the fabric and permanently distort the shape of the suit.

Instead, gently press out any excess water using your hands or a clean towel.

4. Drip Dry, Always in the Shade

Proper drying is one of the most important steps in maintaining a swimsuit.

Be sure to avoid:

  • Drying in direct sunlight, which can cause colors to fade
  • Hanging by the straps, which can cause fabric to stretch over time
    • Using a dryer which can warp the fabric and damage it, destroying thoughtfully designed details

Our Other Tips for Long Lasting Swimwear?

  • Protect against rough surfaces

Pool decks, concrete, and rocky beaches can cause snags or pilling. Sit on a towel to protect the fabric instead.

  • Avoid hot tubs and saunas

High heat and chemicals commonly found in hot tubs and spas can discolor and break down swim fabrics.

If you frequent these environments, consider chlorine-resistant swimwear like Gabar swimsuits. Gabar swimsuits are known for their extended lifetime use because of their chlorine resistant fabric (and following the same care instructions after use).

  • Store your suit correctly

Make sure your swimsuit is completely dry before putting it away. Store it in a dry, breathable space.

  • Do not iron your swimsuit

Ironing can break down the fabric of your suit, weakening the structure. Most swimsuits are designed to be wrinkle resistant anyway! If you’re worried about wrinkles, it should relax on its own once it’s been worn and air dried.

Our Final Thoughts

Taking a few minutes to care for your swimsuit is the best and easiest way to preserve the fit, color, and quality especially if you’re spending time at beaches, pools, or any warm-weather destination. With the right routine, your favorite suit can last season after season.
